Happy Pants Ranch Given Nine Months Notice

A local animal charity, based on Iwade Road in Newington, has been given 9 months to relocate following a three year battle with Swale Borough Council.
Happy Pants Ranch is home to more than 400 animals, most of which have special needs including an epileptic pig, a blind and deaf dog and some three-legged cats.
Amey James, who runs and lives on the site, has confirmed that if she cannot relocate, before the nine-month notice is up, all the animals will have to be put down. She also added that it would mean the charity going under and she stood to lose her house.
The three-year battle with council planners was to turn the use of the land from agricultural to animal rescue and after the first planning appeal was refused Happy Pants was issued an eviction notice, Amey appealed – but on Wednesday 4th December she found out that that appeal had been denied.
The charity moved to the 20-acre Newington site in early 2021 from its previous base at Yelsted and since then has been subject to numerous noise complaints from its neighbours.
A spokesperson for Swale Borough Council told SFM News: “The Happy Pants Ranch applied for retrospective planning approval in 2021 and after assessing the application against national planning policy and our own local planning policies this was rejected. A planning enforcement notice was issued in 2022 to rectify these breaches, in line with our policies. This notice was subsequently appealed by the applicant, and an inspector appointed by the Secretary of State dismissed the appeal, upheld our notice - subject to variations - and agreed with our original refusal of planning permission".
The council spokesperson went on to add: “The enforcement notice requires that the mix use of the site stops and that the land needs to be restored to its original condition before the breaches took place.”
The charity has set-up a Go Fund me page stating "If the sanctuary cannot find a new piece of land to relocate to at the end of the 9 months deadline - September 3rd 2025 - the animals and founder will all be made homeless".
