Two Charged Over Removal Of Shipwreck Artefacts

Two Charged Over Removal Of Shipwreck Artefacts

Two men have been charged in connection with the alleged removal of items from a sunken Royal Navy warship in the English Channel.

HMS Hermes was a protected cruiser built in the late 19th century and converted into an aircraft ferry and depot ship ready for the outbreak of the First World War.

It was sunk by a German submarine in the Dover Strait in October 1914 with the loss of 44 lives.

Officers from Kent Police's Rural Task Force launched an investigation in August 2015 after being informed that a number of historical artefacts had been reported missing from the wreck.

John Blight, 57, of Old River Way in Winchelsea, East Sussex, has now been charged with three counts of dishonestly failing to disclose items of wreck to the Receiver of Wreck with intent to make a gain.

Nigel Ingram, 56, of London Road, Teynham, has been charged with the same three counts in addition to being in possession of £16,000 worth of criminal property.

Both men have been bailed to appear before Margate Magistrates on Thursday 2nd March.

The investigation into the alleged offences was carried out in partnership with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Marine Management Organisation, the Receiver of Wreck, Sussex Police, Historic England and the French authorities.

Men Jailed Over £7.7m Cannabis Find

Men Jailed Over £7.7m Cannabis Find

Two members of an organised drugs group have been jailed following the discovery of £7.7 million worth of cannabis here in Sittingbourne.

Kent Police officers discovered just over a tonne of the class B substance when they executed a search warrant at an industrial unit on Castle Road, at about 9.20am on Friday 23rd September last year (2016).

Thomas Cullen, 57, of St John's Road in Huyton, Liverpool, and Joseph Graham, 48, of no fixed address but with links to the Merseyside area, were also inside the property and arrested as a result.

Both pleaded guilty to conspiring to supply cannabis and class C Zopiclone tablets when they appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday 21st December 2016.

Cullen was jailed for eight years and Graham for six years when they returned for sentencing earlier today (Friday 20th January).

The court heard how after gaining access to the premises, officers discovered 10 wooden crates of which three were open and empty. To the sides of these were multiple vacuum-packed containers with herbal cannabis inside in addition to a number of block-sized packages that had been tightly bound with brown tape.

It was later established there was a total of 1.02 tonnes of cannabis stored inside the unit, with a potential street value of up to £7.7 million.

More than 4,000 boxes of Zopiclone tablets were also seized from the premises, which had a potential street value of up to £396,000.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Mark Froome, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, told SFM News: "Thomas Cullen and Joseph Graham are members of an organised crime group and played an important role in what was clearly a very large drugs operation. We work relentlessly to dismantle such groups and to ensure illegal substances are kept off the streets of Kent and away from those members of the public who are most at risk. The lengthy sentences imposed on these two men demonstrates how seriously we and the courts take the issue of organised crime, and I hope it highlights to others that if you commit offences then your actions will catch up with you in the end.'

• A 38-year-old man from Sittingbourne has also been arrested in connection with the case and is currently on bail until Thursday 16th March.

Man Jailed For Seven Years For Fatal Teynham Collision

Man Jailed For Seven Years For Fatal Teynham Collision

A dangerous and unlicensed driver, who caused the deaths of two men in a New Year's Day collision on Friday 1st January this year (2016), has been jailed for seven years.

One other passenger in Ashley Howard's car suffered serious injuries when it crashed into the Jubilee Pump monument and overturned in a garden off London Road, Teynham, in the early hours of the first day of 2016.

Howard, 23, of Quarry View on the Isle of Wight, spent more than two months in hospital himself following the collision.

Upon his release he was questioned and later charged by Kent Police with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, two counts of causing death while uninsured, and two of causing death while unlicensed.

He pleaded guilty to all offences and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court earlier today (Friday 16th December).

The court heard that Howard and a 27-year-old woman he knew were travelling together in a blue Renault Clio when Howard stopped and offered a lift to two other acquaintances.

Michael Shepherd, 27, and Karl Buchan, 23, both from Faversham, agreed and got into the back seat of the vehicle.

A short time later Howard lost control of the Clio, causing it to collide with a parked car before mounting the pavement and knocking down the Jubilee Pump. The vehicle then travelled into the front garden of a property before hitting a small wall and flipping over onto it's roof.

Mr Shepherd and Mr Buchan were both thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene following the arrival of the emergency services.

Among the injuries suffered by the female passenger were a ruptured bladder, punctured lung and fractures to her neck, pelvis and tailbone. She also suffered bruising to her brain and a deep cut to her head that required 28 staples and 21 stitches.

During the investigation into the incident a specialist forensics officer concluded that Howard would have been travelling at speeds of at least 60mph on a section of road with a 30mph limit.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Di Walker, told SFM News: "this was a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of two young men, which will lie heavily on Ashley Howard's conscience for the rest of his life. Not only is it highly likely he was driving well over the speed limit in the moments before the collision, he should not have been behind the wheel in the first place as he has never owned a full driving licence. A motor vehicle can be very dangerous in the wrong hands, and Howard proved he did not have the experience, skill or maturity to drive in a safe and responsible manner. My thoughts remain with the families of Mr Shepherd and Mr Buchan, as well as with Howard's other victim who still suffers from her injuries to this day, and everyone else affected by this dreadful incident. I hope today's outcome is of some small comfort to them."
