KCC Issues Statement On Recent Traffic Delays

KCC Issues Statement On Recent Traffic Delays

Kent County Council (KCC) has today (Thursday 4th July) issued a Statement regarding the recent traffic problems in Sittingbourne and the Isle Of Sheppey following the closure of the Kingsferry Bridge and the continuing work at the Grovehurst/Iwade junction of the A249.

A KCC spokesperson told SFM News: “We understand how frustrated people living and working in the area feel about the severe traffic delays they have experienced this week while work continues on three major road schemes near Sittingbourne and the Isle of Sheppey.

“Our teams have been working closely with Network Rail since they announced their plans to carry out urgent work to replace the steel ropes that lift the Kingsferry Bridge and we have put in measures to reduce the impact on traffic. These have included making sure that there are no other planned roadworks permitted in the area and part funding with Network Rail an additional bus.

“Our priority is to keep road users safe and it is not possible to remove the traffic management from the A249 or the Sheppey-bound A249 entry slip at Grovehurst Road because works are currently under construction and it is not safe to open them up to road users.

“However, to alleviate some of the disruption, we have extended the area of free recovery for broken down vehicles on the A249 – which exacerbated the traffic delays in the area this week - and we are placing recovery vehicles along the route.

“We are also declining all further requests for non-emergency roadworks in the area for the duration of the closures of the Kingsferry Bridge. Our highways inspectors are closely monitoring local roads to ensure any emergency works required by utility companies are known and completed with as quickly as possible.

“Partners from the Kent and Medway Resilience Forum, including KCC and Network Rail, are taking this matter extremely seriously and meeting regularly to ensure risks of disruption are identified and managed as best as possible.

“We understand people may be anxious or frustrated about journey times taking longer and our advice remains to check travel times before you set off while these essential works are taking place.”

Second Day Of Rush Hour Gridlock In Town

Second Day Of Rush Hour Gridlock In Town

It was yet another afternoon / early evening of "gridlock" in Sittingbourne again today (Tuesday 2nd July) due to the continuing closure of the Kingsferry Bridge.

The bridge remains closed, for essential maintenance work by Network Rail, until 5am on Sunday (7th July). This will also be the case across the weekend of Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July and then another full week's closure from Saturday 20th July until Saturday 27th July.

Along with the closure of the northbound entry slip for the A249 at Iwade/Grovehurst and traffic having to use the A249 southbound towards Bobbing and then northbound carriageway again towards the Isle Of Sheppey it has been a "perfect storm" for delays in both directions throughout the whole of Sittingbourne - not being helped by a collision on the Bobbing Roundabout this afternoon and the outage of traffic lights on Bell Road / St Michael's Road in the centre of town.

Local taxi firm boss, Nick Childs of Green Cabs, told SFM News: "How is any taxi business meant to make any money with this traffic?" He said his drivers and passegers were stuck in traffic for hours both yesterday (Monday 1st July) and again today.

Cllr Mike Whiting, who represents Sheppey on Kent County Council, told SFM News: "A number of residents have written to me about the jams on the A249 in recent days. I know they moved some of the works to take account of some mock exams but clearly they haven’t caught all of them. I spoke to the chap in charge at Network Rail, which owns the bridge, last Friday (28th June) and he assured me they had run through their plans with National Highways, KCC Highways and Swale Borough Council along with Kent Police, the Kent Fire & Rescue Serivce and South East Coast Ambulance service to check there were no known issues".

He went on to add: "The slip roads at Grovehurst should have been re-opened before the closure of the bridge and I’ve asked for a full report on what is causing the issues and how we can avoid it for the rest of this week. I’ll share any reply ASAP."

Online one resident told him: "It's quite obvious what the problem is, we have only one 'on-slip' northbound onto the A249 which is at Bobbing. All traffic from the Grovehurst junction has to double back to Bobbing to access the northbound A249. Plus all of the traffic leaving Sittingbourne at Bobbing and all traffic leaving Iwade at Bobbing. Once you include the normal traffic on the A249 northbound carriageway, we have four lanes all trying to filter down to one lane on the A249 because of the Grovehurst works." She asked: "Would it be possible to reinstate both lanes of the northbound A249 temporarily whilst the Kingsferry Bridge is closed? The on-slip at Grovehurst is still under construction, so this cannot be re-opened yet."

A Kent County Council spokesman told SFM News: “We are aware Network Rail are undertaking urgent work to the Kingsferry Bridge. Our teams have been working closely with Network Rail and we note its bridge works have been planned to minimise the impact to pupils travelling to sit exams during the summer. It is not possible to remove the traffic management from the southbound A249 as part of KCC’s Grovehurst Road Improvement Scheme to coincide with closures of Kingsferry Bridge, as the project is at a stage where doing so would create a significant risk to road users. We recognise major works are disruptive and we will continue to work with partners to monitor the situation.”

Gas Network Volunteers Muck In

Gas Network Volunteers Muck In

Volunteers from gas distribution network SGN have been mucking in to support Sittingbourne’s Happy Pants Ranch as part of a new wellbeing initiative.

Based at the South East Construction depot, 24 SGN colleagues took part in the company's Community Action Programme (CAP) to spend a day tending to special needs animals. Throughout the day, they helped to feed the pigs, laid down new wood chippings in the chicken outdoor area and sorted through old pieces of wood, metal and other pieces of equipment.

They laid new bedding for the pig pen with old, donated duvet sheets and pillows and they also helped out with the cleaning of enclosures. The team also collected donations such as animal food, old towels, duvets and newspapers, as well as items for boot fairs and raffles.

The SGN scheme gives all staff one day away from their usual duties to volunteer with a local charitiy to give back to the local community. Happy Pants Ranch is an independent, no kill, donation-reliant animal sanctuary and rescue registered charity here in Sittingbourne - which provides a forever home to over 350 special needs animals with nowhere else to go. It also acts as a wellbeing hub for the local community and volunteers.

Rosie Duffin is a Traffic Management Act Planner at SGN and, alongside her regular work, she’s embarking on a new journey as a Wellbeing Champion. Rosie explained how she is aware of the benefits that physical activity can have on someone’s mental health and encouraged her colleagues to take part in a CAP day together.

Rosie told SFM News: “For me personally, working on myself while supporting a local charity and spending time with animals sounded perfect. It’s an amazing exercise for team building, increasing team morale while working together away from the office. It creates a relaxed (perhaps slightly tiring) atmosphere and helps build relationships with your colleagues. The organisations we help during CAP days are always so grateful, as every task we do takes a weight off their shoulders.”

Amey James, owner and founder of Happy Pants Ranch, told SFM News: “We rely on the hard work of volunteers to provide facilities for hundreds of animals. Without their support, it would be difficult to continue giving our animals the quality of life they deserve. We loved having SGN with us for the day and can’t thank them enough for the work they did with us.”

New Mayor Announces Chosen Charities

New Mayor Announces Chosen Charities

The new Mayor of Swale, Cllr Ben J Martin, has announced SATEDA and Lupus UK as his chosen charities for the year ahead (2024/25).

Cllr Martin was elected as Mayor at Swale Borough Council’s annual council meeting last month, taking over from Cllr Sarah Stephen.

Each year, the new Mayor chooses two charities to focus their fundraising efforts on.

SATEDA is a local domestic abuse charity that helps women and children escape and heal from the violence and trauma they experience from the people closest to them.

Lupus UK is a national charity that supports people with lupus and campaigns to create awareness for the disease and help with early diagnosis.

Cllr Ben Martin told SFM News: “It's a great honour to represent the people of Swale as Mayor and I am looking forward to fundraising for these important charities. SATEDA is a local charity doing amazing work; supporting the vulnerable women and girls who face abuse from the people in their lives they should be able to trust. They actively help women escape those situations and provide them with much needed mental health support, they also provide free clothing and much more.  I have also selected Lupus UK as my other charity, I have worked closely with a number of people who live with Lupus and it can be a debilitating condition, with symptoms including extreme fatigue, rashes and joint pain. As an autoimmune condition it can lead to further complications, as the immune system can attack the bodies organs, with many people suffering from lupus also experiencing food intolerances and sensitivity to sun light. Whilst there is no cure, Lupus UK are working hard to provide support to people with the disease that makes their lives easier, they are also funding research into Lupus".

Cllr Martin went on to add: “I will do everything possible to champion these two charities and raise funds to help them with their important work, for that to be a success I will need the support of the people in Swale. Please look out for the campaigns I will run and, if you are able to, please support them with donations or your time through volunteering.”

Amendments To 334 Island Bus Services

Amendments To 334 Island Bus Services

Local bus operator Chalkwell has announced temporary amendments to it's 334 bus service to and from the island on Saturdays, following the closures of the Kingsferry Bridge over the next few months.

The 334 will not serve Quinton Road, Sheppey Way and Iwade during the closures with services operating as far as Sonora Fields and Jacinth Drive out of Sittingbourne. They will then join the main A249 and go directly to Queenborough Morrisons via The Sheppey Crossing. The opposite will happen on journeys from Sheerness.

There will be a shuttle minibus service connecting with the main bus at Sonora Fields on Jacinth Drive. The shuttle minibus service will run from 9.46 am at Jacinth Drive, up to the 2.32pm at the Iwade village stop. A timetable can be found here.

Kingsferry Bridge Closures Commence

Kingsferry Bridge Closures Commence

The first of the Kingsferry Bridge closures commenced at 10pm last night (Friday 7th June) and will continue until 5am on Monday (10th June).

Network Rail will be providing a bus replacement for service between Sittingbourne and Sheerness on Sea (calling at all stations except 'Swale') throughout all the closures to enable repais to the road/rail bridge between the Isle of Sheppey and the mainland (here in Sittingbourne).

This is the first of a series of closures over the next two months, with engineers confirming that the work was “progressing well” and issuing photographs of their work via X (formerly 'Twitter') - shown above.

40 steel ropes, which stabilise the bridge when it lifts and were installed in 1995, were found to have degraded and urgently need replacing following a recent inspection.

The next set of closures will last for nine days from Friday 28th June until Sunday 7th July with further closures from Friday 12th July until Monday 15th July. Another nine-day closure will take place from Friday 19th July until Sunday 28th  July. All closures start at 10pm on the first day and finish at 5am on the last. The last trains will depart Sheerness at about midnight on Fridays when it shuts and the first trains will run from approximately 5.43am on the days when the bridge re-opens.
